Cicadas - hot exoskeleton pix! BROOD XIII!
Once again, I’m going to be traveling all day. Still, I was able to spend some quality time with a few bazillion cicadas. I want to research and double-check my facts before I lay them out for you, but here are some pics to tide you over:
This is a cicada nymph exoskeleton.

The nymph cicada sheds this old self and turns into:

Red eyes. The cicada didn’t have red eyes before. It didn’t have wings, either.
I’ve got some great video of cicadas crawling - on trees, on twigs, and even on me. I’ve also got audio. Youtube is not up and running at the moment, though, so it’ll have to wait.
O, in case you didn’t know, I’m referring to the very special, periodical cicadas that have been emerging this past month in the Midwest - the 17 year cicadas. Every 17 years they crawl up and out of the ground, shed their nymph exoskeleton, and, with fancy adult exoskeletons, they mate and get hit by cars and land on people and make birds happy and lay eggs if they’re lucky and also, they make a whole lotta noise.
I’ll give you that video once I’m settled, along with some more information on the 17 year cicadas!
